Irving Einbinder

Mr. Irving Marvin Einbinder, 94, of Falling Waters, W.Va., and formerly of Hagerstown, died early Saturday morning, March 18, 2017, at his residence.

Born Jan. 28, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late Albert R. and Hanna Lyon Einbinder. He attended Antietam Street, South Potomac and Broadway schools, as well as Hagerstown High School, graduating in 1941. Mr. Einbinder furthered his education with undergraduate school at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore; then on a scholarship at The University of Michigan. There he became a member of the university swim team and the Reserve Officer Training Corps. World War II interrupted college, and Mr. Einbinder joined the Army in 1943.

After the war, he returned to University of Michigan for studies and swimming, and became a member of the NCAA Champion Team of 1948-49. Irving attended law school at the University of Maryland, and received his Doctorate of Legal Letters from the University of Baltimore.

In 1952, he passed the Maryland Bar Exam and ranked No. 1. Later that year Irving then opened his law firm and practiced until he was appointed magistrate in 1960. In 1972, he resigned this position because, as he quoted, “I hate putting people in jail or fining them because of the damage it often did to their families.”

Mr. Einbinder returned to private practice in the Einbinder Building, Franklin Street, Hagerstown, and defended the people of Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia for the next 27 years. He retired in 1998.

Irving retired to Falling Waters, W.Va., where he built a home on the Potomac River with his special friend, Shelby A. Hughes. Also, he spent time supervising his charitable foundation that assisted with such groups as the YMCA, The Boys and Girls Club, the Boy Scouts, and families in need in his “adopted” home state of West Virginia.
His hobbies included traveling the world in search of a big bass or salmon catch.

Surviving besides his special friend, Shelby, he is survived by his sister, Anita E. Nelson of Los Angeles, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Mr. Einbinder is preceded in death by his brothers, Gaddy D., Julius L., Harold, William B. and Joseph Y. Einbinder.

The funeral service will be at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, on Tuesday, March 21, at noon. Rabbi Airel Plost will officiate. Interment will follow in B’Nai Abraham Cemetery, Hagerstown.
