Stephen John Dattillio

Mr. Stephen John “Steve” Dattilio, 81, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday night, August 25, 2026, at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was the husband of Mrs. Sharon Ann Klock Dattilio, his wife of 56 years.

Born October 13, 1944, in Norfolk, Virginia, he was a son of the late John Sevier and Genevieve Pryor Dattilio. He graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1963. He had also attended Delone Catholic High School, McSherrystown, Pennsylvannia, and St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School, Hagerstown, where he developed life long friendships.

Steve was a proud veteran of the United States Navy have served for four years. He made three tours during the Vietnam era to the Mediterranean aboard the USS Forrestal and USS Shangri-La.

He worked for 40 years with Mack Truck, now Volvo, Hagerstown, retiring in 2010; and has been a member of United Auto Workers Local 171, Hagerstown. Additionally Steve worked for six years as a Correctional Officer at Roxbury Correctional Institute, Hagerstown.

Steve was a parishioner at St Mary’s and St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Churches, Hagerstown.

He was very much an outdoorsman. He enjoyed golfing and hunting; especially hunting for elk in Montana and pheasant hunting in South Dakota. He was a member of Western Maryland Sportsman’s Club, Sharpsburg.

He, and Sharon, bred Shomberg German Shorthaired Pointers since 1973. Consequently he was involved with Mason-Dixon German Shorthaired Pointer Club; German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America (GSPCA), where in May, 2026, he received the high honor of being inducted the their Hall of Fame; and American Kennel Club (AKC), where he served as Hunt Test Judge. This allowed him to travel extensively across the United States.

In addition to his wife, Steve is survived by his daughter Wendy M. Shanholtz and husband Jammie of Hagerstown; his grandchildren Christopher Lynn Shanholtz and wife Teaira Shanholtz of Chambersburg, and Stephen "Grant" and Ashton Michael Shanholtz both of Hagerstown; his sister Shelly Parks of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania; as well as his God-Daughter Rene’ Robey of Eldersburg; and nieces Nicole Parks Couteau and Angela Myers.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Debra “Debi” Durst in December, 2021; and brother-in-law Stuart “Stu” Parks in December, 2025.

A gathering to celebrate Steve's life will be on Sunday, October 4, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, at Cortland Mansion, 19411 Cortland Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions made in Mr. Dattilio's name to AKC's "Take The Lead", PO Box 148, Clayton, New York 13624 ( www.takethelead.org ). This organization provides services & support for people in the sport of dogs who suffer life-threatening illnesses or disasters.
