Thomas Franklin Greenfield

May 8, 1944 — May 16, 2024

Hagerstown

Thomas Franklin Greenfield, fondly known as Tom or Tommy by many, died Thursday morning, May 16, 2024, at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.  He was the husband of Sue Ellen (Stotler) Greenfield, his wife of 12 years.

Born in Hagerstown, MD in 1944, he was the son of the late Lee Franklin and Helen Irene Greenfield. Tom's early life was spent living in a farmhouse on Death Curve. During his teen years he lived near North Hagerstown High School from which he graduated in 1962.

Tom then volunteered to serve in the US Air Force during the Vietnam era. He was stationed in Korea and England. In England he married his first wife. They were blessed with a beautiful daughter.

Because his military duty assignment in Air Force Police gave him a good background, Tom went to work with the Maryland Division of Corrections including MCI, MCTC and Roxbury Correctional Training Center. Tom married his second wife who also worked for Maryland Corrections. She passed away after about 16 years of marriage. Later, Tom reconnected with a close friend from the “Class of 62” at North High. They were happily married at age 67 and shared 12 years together before Tom passed away.

Tom was a voracious reader his entire life, resulting in him becoming a “master of trivia” on dozens of topics. For many years Tom was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Hagerstown even though his politics were conservative. Tom enjoyed driving foreign cars, shooting, hunting, sail-boating and bird-watching. He especially loved spending time with his daughter. They shared a mutual delight for Beatles music and science fiction movies.

Tom was passionate about military history, owned over 150 books about wars around the world, and watched every war-related movie he could find. For over 20 years, Tom participated in WWI reenacting. He usually played an Australian soldier. His closest friendships were his WWI “brothers".  He was a devoted member of the Great War Foundation and the Great War Association.

Tom was a good friend to many others during his lifetime. He will be remembered for his love and loyalty, his jokes, wit, and loud laughter, his generosity and compassion, and for being “a really great guy”!

Besides his wife, Tom is survived by his daughter, Mina Greenfield (Keith) of Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Lee (Greenfield) Ford, a graduate of the old Hagerstown High School, “Class of 59”.

A visitation to Celebrate Tom's Life will be at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 East Antietam Street, Hagerstown on Saturday, June 8, beginning at 10:00 AM , and concluding at 12 noon, with Military Honors.  Honors will be offered by Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion, Hagerstown. He would love to have us all laughing and happy to have known and loved him!  A private graveside service will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
