William Poole

December 31, 1927 — November 10, 2020

Mr. William Robert “Bob” Poole, 92, of Hagerstown, a resident of Washington County since 1929, died Tuesday afternoon, November 10, 2020, at Doey’s House of Hospice of Washington County.  He was the husband of the late Rita May Fulks Poole, who preceded him in death in 2006.

Born December 31, 1927, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late William Lester and Daisy Virginia Galliher Poole.

A welder by trade, Bob worked for New York Central Iron Works and the Pangborn Corporation, both of Hagerstown, and lastly Cives Steel Company, Winchester, Virginia, finally retiring in 1991.

He was a Methodist by faith and attended Church of God, Hagerstown.

Bob was also a carpenter.  He belonged to the United Steel Workers of America; and United Auto Workers.   He was involved in earlier years with the Stadium League and American Little Leagues as a baseball coach.  In later years, he could be found in the mornings with a group of friends enjoying coffee at Roy Rogers, Burhans Boulevard, Hagerstown.

Surviving are his children, Penny M. Swartz Nigh and Larry E. Swartz, both of Hagerstown; and six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren; fourteen great, great grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Linda Sue Swartz.

Bob was not only preceded in death by his wife and parents, but by his son Gary E. Swartz in 2016; his sister Alice Poole Marshall; and son-in-law, Robert E. Nigh.

The arrangements are being handled by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown.  There will not be visiting at the funeral home.  Inurnment will be at the convenience of the family.
